Philippines: ABS-CBN denied renewal of franchise left thousand workers with job uncertainty



11-07-2020 In an overwhelming vote from the majority member of the Philippine lower House committee of legislative franchises the application for franchise renewal of media giant ABS-CBN was denied fearing massive job loss for its 11,000 employees.

On July 10 Seventy lawmakers voted to reject the media outlet’s franchise renewal application while 11 in favor, 2 inhibited and 1 abstain votes. The rejection practically effectively ceased its TV and radio channel operations that put knee-jerk reaction among its employees as its CEO earlier announced that they might opted for retrenchment of the franchise will not be renewed.

In a lightning rally held at the day of the voting Sentro labor center air that “killing” the franchise bill of ABS-CBN will negatively impacted the livelihood of its 11,000 workers and their only means of survival to support their families and dependents in this time of Covid-19 pandemic.

The TUCP partylist representative meanwhile issued an open letter to the committee on legislative franchises at the hearing deliberation expressing their disgust over ABS-CBN’s plight of their workers as many of its employees are misclassified as talents, project-hire and fixed-term contractuals. The TUCP representative assert in its position that many of those employees should be regularized and enjoy Constitutional guarantee of the right to security of tenure and bargain collectively. In its position the TUCP call for a pro-worker franchise.
